Pride is the failure Scripture warns men about most consistently, and it is rarely loud. It shows up as defensiveness, as needing the last word, as an unwillingness to be corrected. Humility is not low self-regard—it is accurate self-regard held loosely.
James 4:6
God opposes the proud and gives grace to the humble—the stakes are relational.
6 But he gives us more grace. That is why Scripture says:
“God opposes the proud
but shows favor to the humble.”
Philippians 2:3–8
Christ's descent is the pattern—status set down on purpose, for someone else's good.
3 Do nothing out of selfish ambition or vain conceit. Rather, in humility value others above yourselves, 4 not looking to your own interests but each of you to the interests of the others.
